FAQ

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is The Security Detail?

It’s a plain-English newsletter that flags meaningful digital security issues — mostly those affecting Apple users — and only when they matter.

2. How often will I get updates?

Rarely. You won’t hear from me weekly or even monthly. I only write when something serious pops up that I think you should pay attention to.

3. What kind of threats do you cover?

I focus on risks that persist even after an Apple update — things that feel under-patched, misunderstood, or require extra action.

For example, the Airborne vulnerability (April 2025) was patched by Apple, but if you use AirPlay with smart speakers or TVs that haven’t been updated by their manufacturers, you’re still exposed.

And the O.MG cable — which I first saw at DEFCON in 2022 — looks like a normal Lightning cable but includes a hidden Wi-Fi chip and keylogger. It silently captures everything you type and transmits it to attackers.

These are the kinds of threats that go beyond what a simple update can fix — and that’s why this newsletter exists.

4. Do I need to be technical to understand this?

Not at all. I write in plain English. No jargon. No fear. Just enough detail to understand what’s going on and what, if anything, you should do.

5. Is this for Apple users only?

Yes, almost entirely. That’s what I use and what I follow most closely. If something outside that world really matters, I may include it.

6. Is this real security advice?

No. This isn’t professional security advice — it’s just my best effort to flag what I’d tell my own friends and family. Use this as a signal, not a substitute. Always consult a qualified expert if you’re making important security decisions.

family. Always consult a professional for advice specific to your situation.

7. Can I forward your emails to others?

Please do — just suggest they subscribe and pass it on. That’s why I built this: so you don’t have to ask, and no one feels obligated to manually keep others in the loop.

8. Is this free — and will it stay that way?

Yes, it’s free — and that’s the plan for now. If it ever grows to the point where maintaining it requires real resources or ongoing costs, I may introduce a small fee to keep things sustainable. But if that ever happens, you’ll get plenty of notice — and it will only be to protect the quality and independence of the content.

9. Why should I trust you?

I’m a serial entrepreneur and investor with over 35 years in deep tech. I now run an executive coaching firm that helps successful leaders grow. Technology runs in my veins — I’ve always loved it, and I still spend a lot of time thinking about how it works, where it breaks, and what I can do to stay protected. This newsletter simply documents what I do to protect myself, so I can share it more easily with the people I care about.
